Power Does It

Astro, Met Win Respective League Rookie-Of-The-Year Honors

The 2019 class was one of the best collection of players to showcase to what may be in-store for this decade. But two players stood out above the rest as they showcased their enormous power, catapulting them to their respective league ROY honors.

Coming out of Spring Training, the Mets were excited of what 1B Peter Alonso could bring to the table. He was not among the top elite prospects, but was a Top 50 prospect. As the early months came into focus, Alonso was showing the raw power that got him known throughout the league. That raw power got him an invitation to the All-Star Game, especially in the Home Run Derby. At the Derby, he pretty much went on an earth-shattering power display..........leading to the title. In the second half, he went on a tear of eye-popping proportions that he broke the single-season home run record for a rookie. This outstanding rookie performance awarded him the NL's best rookie. It was one heck of a season for the youngster, giving the Mets hope for the future.

It was not until early June that the AL winner would come up. The Astros Yordan Alvarez was already a force to reckon with down in the farms. The Astros felt he was ready so in his first few games, he totally tore up major league pitching that there was wonder if this was for real. With all the attention on pre-season favorite Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Yordan kept on ripping the cover of the baseball that there was no stopping this beast. The Astros rookie proved to be a integral part of the Astros run to the division title. In the end, he easily won his league's rookie award.

A heck of a collection for the future

This past season showcased a collection of first-timers. The Toronto Blue Jays Vladimir Guerrero Jr., the White Sox Eloy Jimenez and the Padres Fernando Tatis Jr. showed they have franchise altering potential. Other promising rookies made their presence known as the season came into focus. The Blue Jays two other prospects: Bo Bichette and Cavan Biggio, showed their star potential with their defense and bats. Reds fans came to witness the talent of Nick Senzel, and, one of the biggest out-of-nowhere surprises: Aristedes Aquino. Keston Hiura gave the Brewers a promising future at second base. The first two-way player this decade, Brendan McKay, made his debut for the Rays. Let's don't forget the Padres Chris Paddack, who displayed ace stuff to hitters. The Dodgers Gavin Lux made an impression late in the season.

More to come

The next wave of prospects are coming in the next few seasons. In the short-term, the likes of the White Sox Luis Robert, the Tigers Casey Mize, the Angels Jo Adell and the Twins Royce Lewis. All eyes are on the Rays Wander Franco, who possess five-tool talent.

The future is bright going into the decade of the 20s.
