Before the lockout, teams went on a spending spree up to the final hour of the current deal. Multiple teams took advantage by adding a key piece(s) that would hopefully get them over the hump. In all, billions of dollars were spent throughout the few days leading up to the deadline.

The Texas Rangers led the way as they added two huge contracts in the infield in the form of SS Corey Seager (Dodgers) and 2B Marcus Semien (Blue Jays). In addition they added a starting pitcher in Jon Gray (Rockies) and an outfielder (Kole Calhoun)

Following in the same multiple format, the New York Mets added pieces in outfielder Starling Marte (A's), his teammate 1B/OF Mark Canha and cornerman Eduardo Escobar (Brewers). The spree got topped off with a historic signing of starting pitcher Max Scherzer.

The Detroit Tigers, who added C Tucker Barnhart from the Reds and SP Eduardo Rodriguez from the Red Sox, went on an unexpected direction as they added shortstop Javy Baez from the Mets for a six-year stay. The team was connected to free agent shortstop Carlos Correa until he was deemed too expensive.

After re-signing their trade deadline acquisition in Jose Berrios, then losing two starters in Cy Young winner Robbie Ray (Mariners) and Steven Matz (Cardinals), the Toronto Blue Jays nabbed Kevin Gausman on a five-year deal from the Giants. However, the Giants managed to re-sign two of their starters in Anthony DeScalfani and Alex Wood; they were able to replace Gausman with Alex Cobb (Angels).

A couple of other teams that were able to make the most up to the deadline were the Seattle Mariners and the Miami Marlins. The Mariners added a Cy Young award winner in Robbie Ray (Blue Jays) and acquired the services of 2B Adam Frazier (Padres). The Marlins added pieces with acquisitions of Gold-Glover C Jacob Stallings (Pirates) and infielder Joey Wendle (Rays); and, signing OF Avisail Garcia (Brewers) on a four-year deal. They were rumored to be going after Ketel Marte of the Arizona Diamondbacks.  

Major free agents are all off the board

The last remaining big free agent is finally off the market; the Boston Red Sox signed SS Trevor Story to a 6-year deal. However, he can opt out after 4 years of the contract.

There are other free agents out there, but they are more towards the secondary and third layer market . Later, teams will convert certain minor-league deals into MLB deals.
