#1 Draft Pick Becomes ROY A Year Later

In 2023, LSU's sensational pitcher Paul Skenes was chosen as the #1 pick overall in the annual MLB Draft. The top draft pick wasted no time in mowing down hitters in the lower minors in his debut season. Last year, the mowing down continued early into the season to the point the Pirates organization felt he was ready for the big-time. So in early May he made his major league debut and was magnificent. From there on out, he proved he was a major league caliber ace that he started the All-Star Game, which he was electric. In the end, his 11-3 record with a 1.96 ERA , 170 Ks and a .95 WHIP was too pass up as he was named NL ROY.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Paul Skenes was part of a rookie class that included San Diego Padres converted outfielder Jackson Merrill and Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio. While the AL was full of a hodge podge of rookies (thanks to the rough start of ROY favorite Rangers outfielder Wyatt Langford), these two outfielders became significant mainstays in the everyday lineup. There was a feeling the NL ROY should have gone to the Padres Merrill as he contributed to the success of a team...... that landed a spot in the postseason. The rookie showcased his talents both at the plate and on the field. He did not have any trouble adjusting to his new role.

The expectancy of promising things from the Brewers Chourio was very high that he got rewarded an eight-year contract before making his major league debut. The rookie did have a rough start to the season. However, as the season progressed on he got better and better no matter where in the lineup he was placed on an everyday basis. He showed his potential impact in the outfield with dazzling plays. He displayed his contributive performance with big games underneath his belt. His debut season sprouted out a .275 batting average with 21 home runs,79 RBIs and 22 stolen bases. He amassed 145 hits. He became the first player to record a 20-20 season before his 21st birthday.
